Link Ethics

So, thanks to Heather, mostly, I've begun to be re-interested in the old Nintendo game "Legend of Zelda" See the website that has a bunch of the old games here.

Some things I've noticed as I'm re-learning the game & attempting to rescue the princess:

1. It is impossible to win without killing a large variety of alternately fuzzy, grumpy, and winged creatures.

2. Such creatures are usually out to get you, and once killed they sometimes leave behind money, weapons or life-force.

3. New lands mean new things to kill.

So, maybe this is basic training, but it is interesting how closely these principles seem to echo real-life war - killing other people allows mercenaries and looters to get money, weapons, and food (or whatever else constitutes life-force) from dead enemies. I have to admit though, sometimes it's really nice to catch a life-force fairy and see those little empty hearts fill up.

Perhaps with love, the true life-force?

[Post-script 9.18.07 - The better I get at killing little creatures, the less I contemplate it.]

The killing also frees many people.

From Wikipedia:

The Legend of Zelda's plot relies heavily on back story given in the short (in-game) prologue and the instruction booklet. Hyrule was engulfed in chaos after an army led by Ganon, the Prince of Darkness, invaded the kingdom and secured the Triforce of Power, a magical artifact bestowing great strength.[3] Hyrule's Princess Zelda split the artifact's counterpart, the Triforce of Wisdom, into eight fragments, hiding them in secret dungeons throughout the land to prevent them from falling into Ganon's hands. She commanded her most trustworthy nursemaid, Impa, to escape and find a man courageous enough to destroy Ganon. Upon hearing this, Ganon grew angry, imprisoned the princess, and sent a party in search of Impa.[3]

So the killing you are talking about also freed people.

Not all killing is bad. Some is necessary. Just speaking in general terms here.

BY the way, I absolutely LOVE Legend of Zelda. Was playing a ROM of it about 5 years ago and was suprised how much I remembered.

Wow this takes me back, Legend of Zelda was awesome though I really loved the sequel, the Legend of Link which ate up the early 90's for me...
Killing in video games is okay - especially the old fantasy games on the Nintendo as the baddies there were always stealing Princesses...
Killing in modern day video games is okay too but only if you are in touch with real life - the modern gore on games and adult nature of them is a little beyond the good old fashioned fun of the old nintendo fantasy games..
