Enough of the Electoral College Already!

Hey - check out this website: National Popular Vote. Basically, it's a way that state governments can work together to make the electoral college system of electing the president irrelevant. In other words, if enough states pass this legislation, the president would be elected by the majority of the US population, instead of the weird 270 electoral vote system that we have now. Go write your state reps and senators! (Unless you live in Maryland - we've ALREADY passed this legislation.)

Wait, why don't we like the electoral college again?

Because Al Gore didn't get elected in 2000, even though he had 500,000 more votes than Bush in the popular vote.

Seriously, though, that instance illustrates how unevenly the power of different peoples' votes are distributed. 500 votes in Florida were worth more than 500,000 votes in the rest of the country. The electoral college is what causes this to happen, and the results are that the non-battleground states (ex. Louisiana) don't get the same kind of service/responsiveness as the battleground states (ex. Florida)
